| The Society | ||
Although the official record of the Christchurch Philatelic Society dates back to 1911 the birth of the Society dates from 24 February 1910. Chums published in England, sponsored the Chums Society of Stamp Collectors and a few young collectors in Christchurch decided to form a local section. These lads met at the home of W J Wilson, the energetic convenor. On 9 August 1911 they decided to break away from the Chums Society to form the Christchurch Junior Philatelic Society and the first meeting was held 15 August 1911. Shortly after a successful membership campaign was launched and at a meeting on 12 August 1912 the word Junior was deleted from the title. The Society is therefore the second oldest in New Zealand and is now the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. We are a friendly group with a very broad spectrum of members ranging from students to top level exhibitors and philatelic writers. Members are only too willing to share their knowledge and experience. In 1998, 67 Mandeville Street was purchased by the Society and the Philatelic Foundation Christchurch. The Societies main aim is the promotion of stamp collecting and offers its members services described below.

Exchange Branch
The Society operates exchange circuits covering the whole of New Zealand. Society members may apply to join as sellers, buyers of both without any additional payment. After consultation with the Exchange Superintendent members can price booklets of their stamps for sale which are circulated to other members within New Zealand and can elect to receive such books. The Society takes a commission on all sales and payments are made to selling members two or three times a year. Material not sold is returned to the owners after several cicruits. Further information is available form the Exchange Superintendent, Christchurch Philatelic Society, P O Box 29, CHRISTCHURCH.
Auctions
Auctions of material on behalf of members or from estates are held when sufficient material is available. Catalogues are sent to members throughout the world. Bidding may be by post or in the room - a licenced auctioneer conducts the sale.
Library
This is the largest philatelic library in New Zealand with several thousand magazines and handbooks. Apart from some of the rarer items, which can only be seen by appointment, books can be borrowed by members throughout New Zealand for a period of one month. This service is free of charge other than postage costs both ways. The Library is pleased to accept donations of any philatelic material - handbooks, catalogues, magazines, dealer's records, Society and Exhibition records, photos, newspaper clippings, videos, etc. A computerised catalogue of the Library's main holdings off books and periodicals is being prepared.
Exhibitions
Each year the Society holds an Exhibition. Entries are restricted to 16 pages and the emphasis is on novice exhibitors and those working up to National exhibiting level. Every entrant is given a written commentary on their exhibit with advice on improving it where needed. Entries are judges by a team comprising International and National judges and apprentices. Entries are free to members.
Subscriptions
Annual subscription $35.00. Where both husband and wife are members but require only one Captain Coqk to be sent a combined subscription of $56.00 is charged. A discount - $5.00 single and $7.50 couple - may be deducted if paid by 31 March or on application for membership. Additional postage is charged to overseas members who are able to receive Captain Coqk by sea or air mail.
